When God's Plan Looks Like Failure
Romans 11:33-36
Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord's thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? And who has given him so much that he needs to pay it back? For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.
Have you ever poured yourself into something — a relationship, a promise, a project — and watched it fall apart? You're left wondering: Did I waste my time? Did God fail me?
That's the ache behind Romans 11. Many of God's own people had rejected the Messiah. It looked like God's promises had unravelled. But Paul's answer is explosive: "Of course not!"
He points to Elijah — hiding in a cave, convinced he was the last faithful person alive. And God's reply? "I have 7,000 others who have never bowed down to Baal." Seven thousand. Elijah thought he was alone. He wasn't even close.
Here's what Paul wants us to see: God's faithfulness has never depended on what we can see. He is always working — even when His plan looks like rejection.
Paul uses this beautiful picture of an olive tree. Some branches were broken off. Wild branches — that's us — were grafted in. Not by our earning, but by God's invitation. And if God did something "contrary to nature" to bring us in, how much more will He be faithful to His original people?
It all comes back to this: "God's gifts and his call can never be withdrawn." Not because we earned them. But because He said so.
And after all the wrestling, Paul breaks into worship. He can't help it. What looked like chaos was actually God weaving mercy through every twist — and it all leads to His glory.
Takeaway: Where in your life are you tempted to believe God has failed? Bring that to Him — not with easy answers, but with honest worship. The God who wove mercy through Israel's stumbling is the same God weaving mercy through yours.

Lord, when Your plan looks like failure, help me trust Your faithfulness. You are weaving mercy through every twist of my story — even the parts I can't understand. Everything comes from You, exists by Your power, and is intended for Your glory. All glory to You forever. Amen.
